About Cody
I’ve always had a camera in my hands. What started as a personal hobby grew into something I couldn’t ignore, and in 2017 I launched TbayAlive to start documenting Thunder Bay’s music and event scene the way it deserved. Trudging through beer-soaked dive bars and dodging elbows in moshpits, I always wanted to capture the magic that was happening on stage. The city has always had more going on than people give it credit for, and I wanted a record of it.
Concert photography is where I got serious, and it’s still a big part of what I do. There’s something about shooting in unpredictable light with no second chances that keeps you sharp. Sports photography has the same pull for the same reasons. But the work I find myself most invested in is portraits. There’s a real connection that happens in those sessions, and that tends to show up in the photos.
Over the years the work has taken me places I didn’t expect. From shooting the most high-energy bar band I’ve ever seen in Reykjavik, to capturing some of Europe’s best up-and-coming drag performers in Copenhagen, I have to say, my favourite shots are still from right here in Thunder Bay.
I shoot Canon, and lately I’ve been getting into film. Film sessions require patience, but the reward is spectacular for anyone who wants something a little different.
